What is ATSC 3.0 or NextGen TV?

First of all; it is FREE Over-The-Air (OTA) digital TV. Yes, FREE ! It is still puzzling to me that even many of my friends outside of the industry are not aware of free over the air TV. ATSC 3.0 is the latest version of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standard. It supports several advancements including mobile viewing, Ultra High Definition ( UHD ), high dynamic range ( HDR ), high frame rate ( HFR ), and wide color gamut ( WCG ) picture quality, as well as immersive audio. This NextGenTV technology is totally based on the Internet Protocol ( IP ). The following intro video produced by ATSC will highlight some of the benefits. ATSC 3.0 and Advanced Emergency Alerts

As we always experience in a catastrophe, cell phone coverage is spotty at least, even down (hurricanes) or not fast enough (earthquakes). As an example, the day after Hurricane Irma in 2017, 41-60% of cell sites in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach DMAs were out-of-service. However, only one full power TV station out of 96 were off-air. Hurricane Harvey was similarly devastating. This video shows how for example PBS stations are crucial for our first responders. The AEA (Advanced Emergency Alerting) functionality of ATSC 3.0 will provide rich media such as live video updates, escape route maps, images and other detailed location-based information. Personalization? Is there such a word? Remember the smart TV reference in the previous post? Most viewers don't even connect their TVs to the Internet today. You can do this today and receive your Over-The-Top ( OTT ) services (e.g. Hulu , Netflix , Amazon ...) in an unified environment. ATSC 3.0 will unleash your chained up TV and integrate broadcast TV into the same look and feel! As ATSC 3.0 is Internet Protocol (IP) based. Having your TV connected to the net will allow you to receive advanced services which we sometimes refer to hybrid delivery (both over the air AND the Internet). Examples are: Real-time voting; Customized content (e.g. dashboard camera of your favorite NASCAR driver) during a live broadcast; Video-On-Demand; Online ordering; Subscription based premium content; Coupons; and More detailed articles on a news subject Of course as with everything, the coin has two sides.
